Butterick Fall 2014 Patterns

Butterick has just released their new patterns for Fall 2014. Let’s take a look!

Gertie has 2 new patterns. I like the back detail of 6094, but probably not with the full skirt. Crinolines are not my thing.

The wrapped jacket in Butterick 6105 is pretty but looks a little too costumey for me.

Butterick 6088 looks like a poor imitation of the OOP McCall’s 6278. Theoretically it should be slimming but the color blocking at the neckline and across the bust just looks strange.

The pleating and top stitching look really interesting on Butterick 6089, but overall it looks a little matronly. I’d be interested to see one of these in the wild and find out if a better fit would make it look more contemporary. The sleeveless version has potential.

Oh, I love when they sew up samples in fabrics that totally obscure the design features! Butterick 6090 actually has a very unique shawl collar that is a nice change from your standard shirtwaist dress but you’d never know from this photo! I like the skirt which I’m hoping is pleated and not gathered, but whoa..that’s a lot of buttons!

Butterick decided to head to Downton Abbey for their Retro Butterick releases (6018 & 6093), which are both interesting but definitely costumes. It’s a little disappointing because usually the Retro patterns are very wearable and with the fall release these seem like they are destined for Halloween costumes.

There are a few more patterns but nothing that really caught my eye. Overall I was rather underwhelmed, with just 2 or 3 patterns that I am somewhat interested in.

 

 

 

 

Tech Talk: Mobile Robot Printer

I came across a Kickstarter for the Mini Mobile Robotic Printer and I was intrigued.  Basically you plop this device on a piece of paper and it prints. As my sister described it, it’s a Roomba that prints ink instead of vacuums. However, what made me back this project is that it can print on any size paper! I own a ridiculous amount of digital patterns, and there’s little more annoying than having to cut and tape them together.  With this gizmo I’m hoping I can just cut off a sheet of paper from a roll, plop it down and let it go!

pocketprinterNow I know I can get my digital patterns printed at Fedex Office and the like, but the last one I got priced would have been $18! That’s more than I’d paid for the pattern.  So I will be excited to get my Mini Mobile Printer and see if my printing dreams come true.

Fit For Real People – Class 2

In Week to of my Fit for Real People we finally did some hands on alterations. After trying on my pinned together tissue, Marta suggested I do a 3 3/4″ Y-FBA and a 3/4″ broad back adjustment. The Y-FBA is new to me but it’s similar to normal FBA. It widens the top of the pattern a bit above the bust but this results in smaller side dart.

The big eureka moment for me was how she figured out how much of an FBA was needed….she measured the gap between the the center front of the pattern and my center front. Brilliant!  It was also interesting to see how other people were fitted and the adjustments they made.

Now I need to get this pattern cut out of fabric so I can pin fit it in Class 3 and choose another pattern for tissue fitting.

Patterns and pattern photos don’t always catch my eye. Case in point Simplicity 1652 from the Amazing Fit Collection.

I wouldn’t have thought much of this pattern until I saw the yellow dress below in my Pinterest feed. I love those pockets!  I did a little more searching and found lots of awesome dresses made from this pattern so it’s definitely on my to-buy list at the next Joann $1 Pattern sale.

Fab Fabric Finds

I was in Jo-Ann yesterday to pick up some black thread cones for my serger, when I decided to look for some fabric for a Thanksgiving skirt.  I ended up picking up 2 amazing fabrics. The first thing I found was this drapey grey knit fabric with black sequins. It was $11/yd but I had a 40% off coupon. I have no idea what I’m going to make but I much I got 4 yards.

Then I was looking for some fabric to make a Liesl + Co Everyday skirt and I ended up grabbing 2 yards this thick  metallic heather knit fabric. It was 50% off so I paid around $7 per yard. When I got it home I realized it was too awesome for a mere skirt and started looking for dress patterns. I think I’ve settled on making Vogue 8787 view B. Thankfully Vogue Patterns go on sale for $4 at Jo-Ann on November 23. V87872
