Fabric Shopping in Honolulu

Last week I was in Hawaii with my family celebrating my parents’ 40th anniversary. So of course Natalie and I had to do some fabric shopping. We ended up driving by Fabric Mart on our way back from driving around the island. Luckily they were open until 7pm so we had time to go back to our hotel in Waikiki and take a quick shower before we went back to shop.

Fabric Mart has a parking lot, which is great because street parking in this area is a bitch. Once you walk in the store you see tons of Hawaiian print fabric! It was around $6/yd for cottons and $4/yd for poly cotton. They also had rayons and prints. The whole front of the store was really dedicated to Aloha fabric.

Besides your typical Hawaiian prints they had a lot of novelty Hawaiian Prints. My sister and I both picked up 3 yards of this fabric.

They also had some funny stuff like this Asian styled Snow White fabric.

The store also had a lot of special occasion fabrics.

And a large section upstairs with quilting, fleece, and home decor fabric.

I ended up taking home 3 yards each of a novelty Hawaiian print and a more traditional but modern print. A post on my Hawaiian fabric haul is coming soon!

Fabric Panel Circle Skirt

One of my friends recently gave me a bag of fabric she no longer wanted. In it I found something I’d never seen before. It’s a fabric panel to make a circle skirt!13590214683_21bc40f377_zI thought this was a clever because you’d be able to make skirts with patterns in ways you’d never be able to out of normal fabric. It makes me wonder if it would be possible to design some panels like this and get them printed at Spoonflower.

Made in America

Last week I was picking up a few notions at Joann Fabric and I was delighted to see this..

creating new traditions

100% Made in America quilting cottons in classic prints and modern colors by Fabric Traditions.  American made products are my Achille’s heel, and this fabric is no exception.  I’m using one of the fabrics in a quilt, and I just finished my Portfolio Shirt using a beautiful gray floral.

I hope this trend continues. Even though some sewing products are made in the USA (Pellon comes to mind), the majority of products we use are produced overseas. I’d even spend more on a product if its produced locally, but I don’t often get that opportunity.  I appreciate that Joann is highlighting this line and look forward to using the fabric in my next quilt.

Portland Super Bowl Weekend Sales

Seems like Super Bowl Weekend is big weekend for crafty type stores to have sales. I guess if you don’t care for football you can go get some deals! Personally I’m hosting a Crafts & Commercials party on Super Bowl Sunday. We might watch some football, but more likely it will be the Kitten Bowl.

If you are located in Portland here are some of the sales I’ve heard about. Too bad I’m on a stash diet!
